About Us

The Tanzania Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) is the largest and longest standing national umbrella organization serving the Tanzanian NGO community. It was founded in 1988 by 22 NGOs.

 

WHAT DID WE DO IN 2009?

Trade: TANGO trade relations unit worked together with ESRF on the CUTS-London project in which it was charged with the responsibility of disseminating and publicizing the finding of trade research undertaken under the CUTS-London trade project.

In this regard three workshops were called to deliberate on the researches and the input formed Tanzania’s input into the regional trade agenda which sought to assess the impact of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) on the trade arrangements and revenues of the East Africa region.

Piga-Debe: TANGO as led organization for Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) Tanzania in 2009 spearhead a mass mobilization campaign aimed at pressuring the government and development partners to give the maternal health agenda the seriousness it deserves. This was initiated by a mass meetings at the district levels.

CSO Participation: In 2009 TANGO with the support of the Foundation for Civil Society and KEPA undertook training sections for CSOs in participatory service delivery assessments PSDA. Secondly, TANGO undertook relationship building exercise between CSOs and the LGA in 20 districts, these session involved CSOs and LGA meeting together and reflecting on their difference and working out possible collaboration mechanisms.

Media training: TANGO in 2009 organized a training session for the media in budget tracking and MDGs. The workshop was aimed at bring the media on board the development finance monitoring and tracking so as to increase accountability.

CSO Ethical practice: In 2009 TANGO in collaboration with the Ethical Commission undertook assessment of the governance practice in CSOs across Tanzania. The aim of this exercise was to see to what extent Tanzanian CSOs adhered to the principles of governance and accountability.

MKUKUTA Review:
TANGO with the support of  the UNDP JP4 Programme undertook a national wide review of MKUKUTA in which all the districts in the country contributed their views on the state of implementation of MKUKUTA. This process was done on a zonal basis. The review was followed by a national workshop which was called to amalgamate the views of CSOs regarding the MKUKUTA process, this was supported by UNMC, UNDP and Policy Forum (PF).

SUTA 2009: For  fours year in a roll TANGO has led the Tanzanian CSOs in mobilizing the people to have a say on the state of implementation of MDGs. The process involved various sub-national levels events—this year’s SUTA saw 1.7 Million people standing-up against poverty and had the highest attendance of  government official both at the national and the sub-nation levels. Meaning that the SUTA message was received by the powers that be.

SADC Poverty Process: TANGO with the support of SADC-Council of NGOs coordinated the CSO input  into the SADC poverty strategy formulation process.

Presentation: TANGO represented member in the following coalitions and thematic committee: MKUKUTA Communication Committee, Policy Forum, SADC-CNGO, NSA Coordination, Corruption Steering Committees, Ethic Commission, World Social Forum, etc.
