Tanzania Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO)] was established in November 1988 by 22 founder-member organisations. To-date the association has grown in numbers to more than 600 member organisations countrywide. The organisations that subscribe to TANGO membership include about 28 district and regional NGO networks. TANGO was formally registered in January 1989 as an association under the Societies Ordinance of 1963. It has since been re-registered by compliance to the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 that recognises it as a network of NGOs. Under the new legislation, TANGO has a registration certificate number 1907 issued in June, 2006.

TANGO was established mainly to act as a unifying organ for non governmental organisations in Tanzania. This was borne out of government’s invitation to NGOs at the time to join them under the United Nations umbrella in the preparations for the Women Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985. After successfully working together throughout the preparations and the actual conference, the 22 NGOs realised the importance of working together and having a common voice.

TANGO’s vision

A strong and vibrant society in which NGOs, and other civil society organisations play an effective role in ensuring sustainable people centered development based on justice, peace, gender, equality, good governance and human rights.

To empower NGOs at the national and district levels, and civil society organisations and individuals, to effectively engage and influence leaders, policies, strategies and development programmes, through capacity building, information and knowledge sharing.

TANGO’s Mission

Member empowerment is done mainly through our capacity building programme as well as through organisational development training, fundraising, information sharing. While our advocacy work is centred on media engagement/advocacy, facilitating policy analysis, monitoring of development frameworks and facilitating anti-poverty campaign coalition. In short TANGO provides the leadership in the civil society’s main role of being the government’s watchdog.
